Correspondence, Undated
Scope and Contents
The Correspondence Series consists of nine boxes of materials arranged chronologically with undated letters found at the end- of Box 7 along with biographical information about Wallace. Boxes 8 and 9 contains fifteen folders of various undated greeting cards and one folder of original poems, also largely undated. Most of the correspondence is of a personal nature although there is some correspondence concerning Wallace's law practice. Between 1867 and 1900 the correspondence consists mainly of letters to Wallace's mother, May B. Luxon with a few letters to C. C. Wallace, Wallace's father, concerning Republican Party activities. From 1901-1910 the correspondence concerns the various schools Wallace attended (Walters Collegiate Institute, Phillips Academy, Yale). Included are progress reports and dinner menus as well as letters between Wallace and his family. Beginning in 1916 and continuing through 1919 the correspondence deals with World War I and many interesting comments are made about the political and economic conditions of the time. There are a large number of letters between Wallace's mother and his sister, Coleman, while Coleman was attending the Conservatory of Music in Louisville. These letters offer an interesting look at the proper behavior expected from young women in the 1920s. Correspondence of the 1930s is mainly between family members along with some letters dealing with the 1936. state and national elections. The letters of the 1940s are largely between family members when the Wallace children were attending various schools. In the 1950s and 1960s a large quantity of political correspondence dealing with various elections, including the 1952 presidential election, are found. From 1968 to 1975 the correspondence concerns Eastern. The correspondence found after 1975 is that of Velma Wallace. A few letters from prominent state figures appear in the correspondence. A correspondent name index immediately following this series lists letters received by Wallace from such persons.
