Scope and Contents

A ballad supposedly written by William Owens and sung at his hanging. This version was written by someone who learned it as a child and he was 72 when he wrote it down. Two similar versions exist in Folk Songs of Middle Tennessee: The George Boswell Collection and The North Carolina Booklet: Great Events in North Carolina History, Vol. 11; however, this version is not the same as either.
