Scope and Contents This collection consists of the original court documents that were transcribed into the volumes held in the Madison County Courthouse. Included were receipts and notes that documented local businesses and epidemics as well as materials on the county poor house and infirmary. In the early 1900s there are dozens of receipts asking the court for burial expenses for individuals who couldn't afford them. McDowell became part owner of the Leavenworth, Pawnee and Western Railroad Company (L.P.&W.), later known as the Union Pacific, Eastern Division, along with James C. Stone, A.J. John R. Pates Papers

Scope and Contents

John R. Pates was a conductor on the Richmond, Nicholasville, Irvine, and Beattyville Railroad (Riney-B) which was later purchased by the Louisville & Atlantic Railroad. These papers include a scrapbook, train time tables, correspondence and report cards for his son who attended Model School. The scrapbook is composed of many news clippings about the Riney-B railroad during the time he worked as conductor and superintendent.
