The photographic collection is rich in its depiction of early twentieth century prison life and conditions. The collection covers numerous subjects such as prison living conditions, recreational activities, industries, hospital care, corporal punishment, work gangs on the farm and quarries, vocational activities, weapons confiscated, prison architecture, and the death house. A few of the images are of prison officials, primarily in the federal penitentiary system.

This collection consists of photographs of the Indiana State Penitentiary collected by Dr. Hartley in the process of writing a book about the prison. They can be used in conjunction with the Correctional Photo Archive and the William G. Hinkle Collection.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of postcards of prisons and reformatories from forty-five states. Also included are a few postcards of convict ships, torture devices and foreign prisons. These postcards have been collected by Dr. William G. Hinkle over a twenty-five year time period from various vendors.
